WelshAndy
I've been offered one of each gun and unsure on which one to buy and then use to train my lab. What are your thoughts on this please, is there much difference ie noise? Cheers Andy
kent
start with 6mm short blanks at a distance, move closer over time then .22 long blanks. 9mm blanks I should think will be much noisier things and more expensive, in training it aint hard to go through over100 a week so cost comes into it
WelshAndy
Thanks for that I'll go for the .22 blank. He's been on the dummy launcher for about 2 months just want a blank firer so he doesn't always associate a bang with something falling out the sky. WGD
Just use your launcher with no dummy on it?
WelshAndy
I did think of that but it can be a little awkward firing as you always have to use both hands, where with a pistol there is a spare hand for hand signals etc.
WGD
Fair comment about having a free hand, a pistol also lets you fire it behind your back or in your game bag so you know the dog is reacting to the shot and not just you fiddling about with a launcher. WGD
Similar test, if you think your dog knows the stop whistle have him walking at heel and pip the stop whistle without breaking stride, if he stops he knows it, if he doesn't there's a gap to be plugged. WelshAndy
He knows the stop whistle mate, I can walk him to heal off lead, blow whistle I carry on walking and he is sat yards behind me. I've also started with stopping him after I've sent him for a retrieve. Throw dummy out send him out stop him, and either recall him or send him for the dummy. Obviously I'm not over doing this as he is still only 11 months and I don't want him to loose his 'drive'.
