henry_o
Hi folks, I'm looking at getting a GSP pup within the next year. I'm intending to get a bitch at the moment. I've worked spaniels a fair amount (my brothers' and dad's cockers and springers), but not to a high standard and never trained one mysef from a pup. I'm now coming back to the farm after living in the city so hoping to train my first gun dog. I do a fair amount of rough shooting and family/friends driven days. I will also be taking my new mate along pigeon shooting and duck flighting. So, taking those needs into account i deided on a GSP, and the other half is pretty set on this too. However, i'm looking for reputable training materials such as books/dvd's etc. Can anyone recommend anything that relates to training HPR breeds? Or does anyone have their own experience of training a GSP? Thanks for any replies! Henry
WGD
The Versatile Gundog by Guy Wallace and DVDs by Rory Major or Tom Brechney. Check Paul French Video or Sporting Scene for the DVDs. I'm not even commenting on your choice of breed, that is your decision but if you want some food for thought search on here for Portugese Pointers on a thread by Cosd. henry_o
Thanks for replying WGD. I will be checking those suggestions out tonight. I'll have a look for that thread. Think we're pretty sure on breed but it's always good to keep an open mind and compare attributes. Thanks

Dave1087
Hi I tried books and DVDs for training but when thing go wrong (and they will) you can't ask for advice so best thing I can say is find Someone who dose training near you and get some lessons hope this helps
kent
Try and get a mentor for when the wheels fall off a bit, your not too far from Rory Major. A few training days will go a long way in helping you and the dog and it does give you someone you might turn to at times of stress. Its also worth doing proper 3rd party enquiries into which pup. remember pro gundog guys do this for money so don't expect something for nothing Edited February 20, 2013 by kent
henry_o
Thanks for the reply Kent. Yes I have a few ideas on where the pup will be coming from. I will be sure to follow those details up re the trainer.
