Stratts
My boys have been bugging me for a while now to get out shooting with me but alas I think they are still just a bit too young. So I took them out Saturday to get involved by building our 1st pigeon hide together. Once it's complete I've said they'll be able to set out some decoys with me and sit and watch the pigeons come in and anything else that may stray near, but without the guns for now. I know what will happen the birds will flood in and it'll do my head in but at least it'll give me an idea how long they could sit for!! We were only out for a couple of hours coz it's still bitterly cold but made a decent start and had a nice time. I'll update the thread as we go along building. And if anyone has any tips on what to use in the hide please let me know as I've never done one before. I thought about some willow that would take and could be pruned and formed in the future?? deny essex
Nothing like teaching them young Most will agree a net hide is more versatile and mobile to put where the birds flight path is. Best to make any hide just as big as you need it to accomodate you, kit , dog if you have one and or anyone with you. I have made permanent hides on one of my permissions but only under where I have noted a regularily used area as a flight line. But make sure you are not going to cut down and use anything without the farmers permission would be wise first.
Stratts
Thanks mate me and a mate are gonna site a few around the farm near areas that they roost and this corner is a favourite spot for them. Also gets the squizzers going at the feeder so it's multi purpose and needs to be big enough for 2 and our gear. I reckon the others would be smaller but I was giving them free license to do how they wanted really. The farmer is ok with them being put up and left and no worries trimming a few trees up, the areas could do with a proper bit of coppicing really tbh! fenboy
For permanent hides just stick some sturdy posts in and run chicken wire around them , mother nature will soon have enough stuff growing up the wire to make a great hide.
