lee-kinsman
As with any human/animal there are those that need knocking on the head at birth, however, I'm not a believer in "runts" of the litter being doomed from birth. There are some hereditary problems with dogs but I personally believe that all well bred gundogs have a good chance at becoming good gundogs in the right hands. FalconFN
The runt could be the runt because it has something wrong with it or have future health problems if it doesn't get enough milk early on, but there is nothing to say it won't be a very good dog. Runts can be more submissive and for that reason easier to train and my father didn't mind taking the runt for that reason (and they were cheaper or even given away which helped).
