Geese in Holland

Just read this in Jan 2013 issue of Modern Gamekeeping writtten by editor Peter Carr. quote. Winter goose shooting was forbidden in 2001,but shooters are now being pressured to shoot some 350,000 geese in summer when the birds are nesting. Bird protectionists actually favoured this rather than opening up ethical winter shooting again. Increasing numbers of wintering geese choose to reside in Holland, rather than fly back to the artic, and agricultural damage claims have rocketed. Dutch hunters are quite rightly disgusted by this, and it gets worse. Because the numbers are not being shot, gassing of geese is being sanctioned during the moult stage when they shed their flight feathers, and are easily herded across the grassland into sealed trucks to be gassed at the expense of the state. unquote. Can anyone verify this. Sounds to me these are greylags. squirrelhall

Well as far as I am aware there is a bit of truth in this, the Dutch are not allowed to shoot geese for recreation during the winter but can shoot geese to protect crops. They still shoot 10'000 s of wild geese but are not allowed to enjoy doing it. The wild migratory geese do go back to the artic like they always have done, but like this country they have an increasing population of 'feral' birds, Greylags, Canada's,Barnacles, Egyptians etc. It is these year round birds which have been rounded up and gassed, terrible state of affairs, I would think it is the Greys and Canada's which are getting culled.
