magpieman
Hi everyone. ive recently bought myself a pre owned AA TX200 MK2. ive read quite a bit of stuff on here about the recommended killing range for rabbits, 35 / 40 yards, required group sizes etc. i don't have a chronograph so im wondering if there's a common house hold item i.e a tin of beans etc that i might shoot to measure at what range "my" rifle would kill a rabbit. eg would it need to shoot straight through the full tin, or would penetrating just one side represent enough power for a clean humane kill, any idea's =) ? poguemahone
you really need a chrono reading mate, then you know for sure. if its doing 11-11.5ft/lbs then you've no worries about power to kill rabbits at the range you mention (.177 will go straight through at that range) put in your location and someone nearby may have a chrono
magpieman
cheers bud =) ive not long moved to a small village just outside tiverton in devon, i know there's plenty of folk about near me on it coz i hear bullet rifles n shottys goin off the whole time, i think the fact i dont do the whole pub might be a bit of a barrier lol. my old man knows his stuff but he lives miles away. his air rifles are all tweaked and i know what state his pellets are in after they've splatted off the back plate of his steel target holder. a quick play with a chrono would be cool n a lot less old school lol
magpieman
ha' ive just measured out 40 yards and its actually not that far at all. does make me wonder why folk put massive scopes on air rifles as i was intending to do, mildots make sense for sure, but mag over 12 with 50 mm objective lenses seems way beyond what a 12ftp air rifle could ever need ? alex.mc
There is a free app for smartphones called Chrono connect. http://www.chronoconnect.com/ If you have the stuff to measure distances accurately, it uses the sound of the gun firing versus it hitting a target to work out the velocity. It seems to mixed re4vues and couldn't be considered as accurate as a proper hardware Chrono, but it would serve as a reasonable indication. fenboy
40 yards may not look far , but try putting every pellet in a area the size of a pound coin at that range and you will find its not easy , and thats the sort of group you need to be getting to be able to shoot live quarry at that range. magpieman
yeah i did end up thinking that the distance is relative to the size of the kill zone, lol that got me thinking the diameter of a pound coin times the hight of the adverage male equates to hitting a man sized target 2463 yards away, thats only 244 yards off the longest recorded sniper kill, best start saving for my schmidt and bender scope now lol. for sure though hitting a quid sized target at 40 yards consistantly is gonna take a bit of practice
