take em
i noticed a couple of skiens(50ish in each) of greylags flying down a river a couple of weeks ago and today i've seen 4 skeins of canadas flying around(10 in one and 30ish in others). just wondered if anyone knew what there upto in big groups at this time of year? i thought they'd be looking after young at the moment. scolopax
Geese I think do not breed until at least there second year, if not third or fourth. Likewise some geese of breeding age cannot find a suitable territory to call their own, but in general the flocks of geese in the summer are non breeders and failed breeders. There was a report on Whitefronts in Greenland which found that only a small fraction of the adult population ever nest, and it is the same pairs which produce young year on year, which seemed a bit strange to me but I have not read the report to get the details.
