Cracking chub Dave.

Seconded. Had my biggest night fishing for barbel on a boilie over a bed of hemp and pellets. Never weighed it but was bigger than my last 5lb + efforts on more traditional tactics.

Nothing light fishing the more traditional methods.

Cheese, slugs, bread from now on lol

If the river you are fishing is anything like mine, Low, clear and quite thick with weed, i would stay away from using a stick at this time of year as it just make more problems than its solves. If you can find a nice hard patch try either touch or tip ledgering with very thin pre stretched hook link and a smaller hook than usual.

I think regarding bait, you will do better on anything natural in low clear water at this time of year, the chub are much more cagey than they are when the river is high and coloured. If you want try a nice sized lob, however, if pre baiting a couple of likely looking swims to optimise your chances, then just go with maggots. Literally everything eats them and i have caught ever single one of my chub on them to date. I started just using red, however one season i decided on a change and for a normal session i now buy 2/3 red to 1/3 white. I don't know why but this colour ratio is what i have had most luck on. Bait is very subjective but few fish will resist a maggot. Not that something like cheese paste doesn't work, for me it just seems a little obvious in clear water.
