First Shoot!!!

Hi guys,

As i am sure your aware i recently thought of getting into airgunning again (after years of garden plinking in the summer!) and asked for some advice about what to get etc. As a result i brought my beloved .22 BSA Lightning with Tasco 3-9x50 sights for my rifle. As gear went well i went round and saw the "old man" on sunday and managed to "procure" a nice pair of new size 10 work shoes (handy we have same size feet!). Then today nipped down to my local surplus store and brought a nice camo 95 tropical DPM trousers and a Camo 95 Ripstop Jacket (was gonna go for the german stuff but patriotism and cheaper price swayed it) all for £40.

After an intial phone convo with the land owner last friday who said i could come and shoot, i have not been able to get hold of him since and i dont mind admitting i was getting rather worried that i had lost the permission before i'd fired a single shot! However in an act of desperation i text the guy tonight explained the situation and that i wished to come down tomorrow afternoon. Got a pleasant reply 1 hour later, "fine, see you then." as a result i am all set up to go down and have my first shoot camo and all! I looked on the ordnance survey map and it appears to be 1 square KM and apparently that is one of the two farms the gentleman owns in the same area!

Therefore 2pm tomorrow we are going to meet up and i am going to get a guided tour of the farm, along with obviously any rules he wants me to respect. Hopefully he will let me bring my mate who also shoots, but will casually ask that if i feel he wont mind. The big plus being he is family and the fact that apparently there is another cousin who has married a huge local farming family so hopefully even more land! Plus, on top of that i have seen a nice little farm on the way to uni with 3 trees full of 15 or so crows this morning! Plus i know this area is a rabbit hot bed as they run round uni all day long! So once we get up and running perhaps go for even more land! I wish to try my hand at lamping eventually.

So now all i can do is wait until wednesday afternoon and see what my shots are like and if good enough so what we have in the way of quarry on the land!

Will keep you all posted on the results and any quarry (hopefully some pics)!

Nice one, its a good feeling when you get your first piece of land under your belt.

As regards to taking a friend. I would leave it for abit, i wouldnt ask him straight off, go on your own for a month or 2 allowing him to see that you can be trusted. Then maybe drop in the idea of a helper to spot and/or pickup.

Just back from the shoot,

Arrived a bit late due to the fact my girlfriend got lost on the way their, but as it was her uncle he didnt mind. Introduced myself to him, he seemed quite nice had a luck at my gun and then showed me the farm's boundarys. He said he also had another 4 farms and showed me them all on the map. One of them he showed me is loaded with rabbits. Apparently they got 70 this week lamping! He then commented on the gun, saying it was a good place to start but when they have the shotguns and clays out next I can have a go on a "proper gun"!

He then said i would be best zeroing in the gun in his backgarden and then can go for a walk whilst he went with his daughter to purchase a new quad. Got the sights zeroed in eventually and was getting 40mm groupings from standing at 30 odd yards. Then i went for a walk around the field to see the land, which was absolutely empty with no quarry in sight.

Eventually he came back, I gave him a hand loading a van and we went in the house for a drink. Inside we discussed about were else i could shoot and the various pest problems he had. I also met the gamekeeper who is a bit cranky, discribing me as a"townie" but eventually think he will warm up. Apparently in the winter he cant keep the pigeons of his sprouts on one farm so is going to put me up some hides to shoot them from and although its not a "proper gun" it does have a sliencer he says so i can keep hammering the pigeons and the rabbits!

All i can say is i think I have landed a bit of a goldmine in the way of land and a sport for life! So now waiting till sunday when i can spend the day shooting and get a proper look round the rest of the fields.

About my mate i will see how things go and as dazzy said i will mention it later but he is really happy that i am there as he seems to want as much of the quarry shot and from what he says their is to much for me alone!
