Anyone want to share results/costs of 20gauge proof data

Recommended Posts

I have some great recipes for 20 gauge cartridges that I have used for some time with great success but I don't have the pressure data to go with them. I would like to go to the Proof House with these loads and have them tested and wondered if anyone else would like to share some of the costs and then the data.

My loads by preference begin with the 30gram 5 fibre load that also doubles up for use in my moderated gun and the many photos I have posted of good bags using this confirm its usefulness

Next is my 28gram 6 plastic load, great as a general 20gauge game load

I would also like to test this with a fibre wad and obturator as my third choice

Finally I have a very economical 23gram 7.5 plastic load that I use for clays.

I understand that they would need to be tested in batches of four and that cost is about £5 per shot so the whole cost if I did them all would be about £80. The upside is that we would have a very broad range of tested cartridges from which to choose. I would make up all the cartridges to be tested and see them to the proof house.

Any comments?

i would love to help with the proofing, the big problem i have is its expensive, i`ve spent alot of money there, about £500.

the issue i have is it costs £40 for proofing a shotstring of 10. or if you were cheaping out you`d go for 2 sets of 5 shells. you need to send in a minimum of 5 shells. i proof 10 shells per batch and i have multiple proofed loads.

most have failed, but i have been pushing a new powder very hard. but i have the charicteristics of the powder. through the range of 21gram to 28gram, fibre / and plastic.

if you go to birmingham and ask for proofing of under 5 shells they probbly would do it but there is no point.

also there are multiple types of proof normal or HP, and whether you weigh the shot and powder out to be exact or you just whip out a batch from your reloader. i weigh everything then proof, when i do a mass production run, i drop the right amount of powder and about 1 gram or 0.5 gram less shot. this does not lower the pressure in my "great" loads. but i try to get 95% of my target weights. as the loads i make are upper pressure loads 650bar -740 etc, so even minor reductions wont change the loads charicteristics or performance.

i`ve been tempted to go to london to proof. its closer.

another big problem i have is physically getting the shells and a submit sheet, (declaration document) to the testing facility. it is too expensive to courier.

If I go ahead I will weigh out each shell individually to make up sets of 5, not 4 having read your post and would just have to suffer the trip to Birmingham to drop them off. Thing is these have all proved to be great loads so proofing them would be the icing on the cake.
