grimey121uk
I purchased a brand new SAK moderator a few months ago to go on my Ruger 10/22 (factory screw-cut) which is used for some target shooting on the clubs 50m range, having used it today for the first time there is clearly something wrong with either my rifle or the moderator. The point of impact with the moderator is about 4 foot low at the 5 o'clock position compared without (bearing in mind this is at 50 meters).Interestingly its a fairly consistent point of impact and it doesn't appear the bullet are tumbling looking at the holes they leave on the paper (no key holing). Having come home I have stripped the mod down and can possibly see where the bullet is clipping the moderators internal baffle, is there quick way to tell if the issue is worth the moderator or the screw cut thread on my rifle? Notice the slight lip on the bottom side of the baffle also for the 10 shots I put through it there is an awfully lot of powder/lead fowling; Edited November 10, 2013 by grimey121uk
steve_b_wales
The moderator should'nt cause any problems with accuracy. It could be the thread on the rifle barrel is not true, thus causing the moderator to be slightly off when mounted. I'm not sure how to prove what is causing the problem, although I would bet it's the barrel thread. You could try another moderator if you have one, but you are risking damaging that one again. Another option is to try the moderator on a different rifle, perhaps a friend of your's could do this?

Yeah good idea, I will see if anyone else at the club is willing to test it on their rifle, I do have access to other moderators but as you say, I don't want to mess them up too. Getting the moderator tested on someone else's rifle won't cause them any problems, and if the fault is with your rifle barrel's thread, then no more damage will be caused to the moderator. As for the mod' getting dirty, this is common when using rimfire ammunition. It's very dirty. I only clean my SAK after many 100's of rounds have been through it.
