tody27
Hiya I have aquired an o/u 12bore with multi changable chokes. Although I know what their purpose is, I still dont know how they are classifeid. Last week at the local gun shop I asked the gunsmith what chokes he had. He told me a load of information that just came across as gobldygoop (wot a word!). Please can you tell me any info on chokes, any would be appreciated. Cheers Tody
Guest charlie
If you are a excellent shot then you can play with chokes, if like me you are average stick to open or improved until your skills have improved. good luck
Cranfield
When you say, that you don,t know how the chokes are "classified". Do you mean, what is the difference between the choke sizes ? Or, do you need help in identifying the chokes you got with your gun ?
tody27
cranfield I mean I dont know what the symbols mean, i.e 1/4 choke. Also I would like to know how I would identify what the chokes were that I got with the gun. Tody
Cranfield
The chokes are usually marked, by a notch in the top, or a star/indentation on the side. 1 = full 2 = 3/4 or improved modified 3 = 1/2 or modified 4 = 1/4 or improved cylinder 5 = true cylinder. The smaller the number the "tighter" the choke. The choice of chokes, like most things, is a matter of personal preference and comes with experience. For wood pigeon shooting over decoys, I use 1/4 in the "front" barrel and 1/2 in the "back" barrel. I also use the same choke settings, for driven game shooting. If you do a "search" on this Forum using the word "chokes", you will find much has been posted about the subject.
