Lord Geordie
Up at the crack of dawn this morning, kit sorted a quick wash and ready to leave! I hop in the car and set off! I get a few mile down the road and realise I forgot my gaiters! Quick swing about and dash back! Off I go again! Not a bad drive up "about an hour" and was first to arrive. There didn't seem like much about on looking about! But I got my new coat on and the gaiters and sorted out the belt with carts and waited for the other lads to arrive! We made a start just after 9am and our team called heads and won! The caalptain chose us to shoot the first drive! We lined out across the bottom of the cover crop, and the beaters made a start pushing through! I was watching a good few pheasants and a couple of snipe and partridge swing over right to left downrange. A few shots rang out but nothing fell. A few moments later a call echoed through the field and I saw a cock pheasant heading my way! I didn't expect it to keep coming my way! But come my way it did! About 35 yards out it turned and offered a cracking broadside shot. Click went the safety! Then a little lead and a squeeze of the front trigger! Boom! I missed! So to.the rear trigger and extra lead! Boom! Wings folded and down he came!. Stock cold in the air! I felt fab! First bird in the bag! I composed myself and extracted the empties and popped in a fresh set! Another call. Another pheasant barreling down the field. About 70 yards out it peeled off to the north and I didn't want to risk a shot, it was too far and a bit low too. About 7 seconds later I heard a crack and seen it fold! Then I heard the distinct.sound of pheasant wings, I swung about and saw a cracking dark pheasant breaking the hedge top at a good speed. I flicked the safety off gave it a little more lead and.squeezed off the first trigger. Down he came again dead in the air, and first"barrel! There was a fair few other birds breaking! But nothing more my way! Of course we shoot drive one! So drive two We beat! So we pushed through the wood for the other team! There was quite a few shots but again not many birds! Drive 3 was a hoot. We all lined out and waited for near an hour with NOTHING showing  We beat the fourth drive "again a wood" and put up just 2 pheasant! Then back to the cabin for lunch. Lots of chatter and cheese with port etc! Then when we had finished we had just 2 drives left. We had the pond and the other team had the last wood. I lined up on the pond and never got a shot off Ducks were either too low or to distant. So lastly we beat the wood for the others! What a show! It was like a battery of anti aircraft guns in full swing! The birds just kept coming and coming. They ended.with a good bag in the end! 44 was the total!
