Will Poon
I've looked at a few today and this is the picture of the barrels of the gun I'm interested in
HDAV
The Americans tend to be neurotic about the fallibility of damascus, but maybe that has something to do with their fear of/liking for litigation. Damascus barrels certainly could not be mass produced, requiring one or more skilled workman twisting and hammering each tube under the direction of a foreman, as I understand it. By the way, has anyone seen the ones now being produced for Purdey (I think)? To my eye, the twist and colour are not nearly so beautiful as on the old ones. The Americans don't have proof tests and are renowned for very hot home loads! The new Damascus isn't really Damascus made it looks nice but I think they over did it with the Damascus steel action it's now just another bit of machined steel the company that make the steel is quite cool in Sweden damasteel AB iirc
