bornfree
Someone asked a question on shotgun barrel pressure on another thread, which got me thinking about rifle cartridge pressure now I would have thought something like a 220 swift would be very high up the list, small bore/high speed but no there are several larger cartridges with higher pressure.is the max pressure set by the strength of the brass? Guest cookoff013
no, max pressure is set by a governing body. the manufacturer or inventor of a cartridge can stipulate what pressures are maximum.
kent
Maximum operating pressures are set by SAMMI for all adopted centrefire cartridges. Some older cartridges have been reduced to account for older weaker actioned guns that might exist etc. in recent times. Reloading guides often give this max pressure std., though the handloader has no real way of measuring it so its of limited use. The information is mainly used in the manufacture of factory ammo to determine an all round safe top limit and keep them from legal claims Don't judge pressure by what a cartridge does or how much powder it takes Edited February 19, 2014 by kent
