Theskyfox
Hi Guys, does anyone have a Pulsar Challenger night vision setup? I'm considering getting one..and they seem pretty good value for money. From what I've read online the supplied infrared illuminator is pants, so an additional high power illuminator is a must. If possible I'd like to see what the vision is like through them...and if anyone has any experience of them it would be good to know. I have looked at the NS50. It is a really good system from what I've seen but I don't like the idea of having to shoot through a tv screen mounted on top of the rifle. -Andrew
bullet boy
Andrew I looked through one at the recent Shooting Show and I'm gonna get one-thought it was good for what I need. I asked questions on this unit on other Forums as I want a decent NV add-on for Ratting at no longer than 25 yards in a Barn. You are right in what you say-for better light conditions I understand getting an extra IR illuminator is needed. Some people say the Challenger can be fussy using different scopes but I'm gonna bite the bullet and get one cos people say they are excellent value for money. It depends what you want it for and what ranges are you shooting at? If you want a quality add-on for Fox Shooting with a Centrefire rifle say for instance then you need something like the fantastic Starlight Archer Gen 3 unit. I have the Archer but am not gonna use this to shoot Rats in a barn in fear of knocking it!lol ATB bud.
Theskyfox
Cheers for the reply. I'm going to be fitting it onto a Hawke Sidewinder 50mm scope, for use in a .177 sub 12 ftlbs air rifle. Max effective range only needs to be about 50 yards, but of course its nicer if it has a bit more range. When you get it, do you think you could post up some pictures and scope views? I don't know anyone thats got one, and the local gun shop only pushes the NS50's. -Andrew

Personally I'm not a fan of the Nitesite cos of the leads on the unit and the glare off the TV Viewer.Im not saying it don't work but it's not for me. I think with a good extra IR this Challenger unit will be fine for you at 50 yards.

norfolkgoose
The challenger is very good value I got one 6 weeks ago with ir and its great easy to use and is good out to 100 + yards but realy depends on what scope you use with it.. best bit is no wires and it takes seconds to fit on any scope so much better than the ns 50 set up . norfolkgoose
Scopes are the PAO swat compact 3-12×44 ir pa and PAO swat 4-16×56 ir pa topaz I think there is a older topic on the challenger on this site with a list of scopes that will suit nv add ons like the challenger hope this helps
remmy1100
ive used one for 3 years and its been no problem took hundreds of rabbits out to 160yds with extra ir on a nikko sterling 6x24x56 scope and plenty foxes out to 200yds the challenger is very capable with a good ir illuminator as on board one is pants.they work excellent on hawke scopes too, just fitted a PAO swat 4-16×56 ir on my rimmie and works great with challenger too Edited February 26, 2014 by remmy1100
Theskyfox
Just an update....I have since installed this unit onto my S410F TDR. I've not had the chance to test it in the field, but so far everything has been easy to set up and connect together. It comes with plenty of manuals and carry bags. Positives: -Easy to set up -All equipment connects and fits really well -On its own the NV unit is incredibly clear. For the price its actually outstanding -Very lightweight and IP rated units Negatives: -You lose approx 4 inches of space from the back of your scope, it would have been better if they could have put it in front of the scope -It can be rather fiddly to get the reticle in the scope crisp clear. I've found with a low level Illuminated Reticle it is very clear, but I'm not sure what negative effect this might have on the life of the tube...so I'm going to look at how to get this clearer whilst leaving IR off. You will 100% require an extra illuminator. Whatever one you get, make sure it is adjustable in power (otherwise it can be too bright) and make sure it has an ajustable sweep/spot mode. I went for the L808 (which offers both of these features). -Andrew
remmy1100
hi andrew if you adjust the eye relief on rear of your scope you will find reticle clearer, even if its clear during day just adjust it then try nv on keep adjusting and you will get it clear as in daylight hope this makes sense
Theskyfox
Remmy, Just tried this today. You are right...I extended the eye relief to its full extension, focused it and I'm now able to get my reticle clear as day. Cheers for that! Only downside is my scope tube is incredibly glossy...think I might need to wrap a little PTFE tape round it just to tighten it up a bit. Otherwise its fine. Cheers -Andrew
