motty Posted March 22, 2014 Report Share Posted March 22, 2014 My lamping expeditions have been infrequent over the last couple of years, due to my lamping partner having to work so often. I own no rifles myself, but I've been using them for quite a few years now. I usually shoot the rabbits and my mate takes a majority of the foxes. Last night we had a free couple of hours, so out we went. The first few fields we didn't spot much, but we then went to a field of maize stubble where we have killed a few foxes in the past. I was checking out what we thought was a cat in the hedgerow, when another set of eyes were spotted, getting closer. I carried on squeaking and the fox just kept coming. When it got to about 70 yards I shut up. I think it would have come right up to us, and if I had the shotgun with me I would have carried on squeaking. My mate was ready over the roof of the truck. The fox stopped for enough time to take the relatively simple shot. The loud crack told me that the bullet had connected with the foxes head. A federal 55gn soft point in the head - lights out. We carried on over some grazing common (where we saw hundreds of rabbits for another day) and I had my second go with the new .17. I got a couple of nice clean rabbits to feed the ferrets with, so I was pleased with that. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
