davhope
Ok, I have recently purchased a .308 brand new, and as this is my first New rifle can anybody advise me on A universally accepted method of breaking in a barrel, I have read several threads on this subject and they all seem to contradict one another. What I am looking for are either manufacturers specs or recomendations or failing that at least two people that can agree on cleaning routine,( what with etc) to number of shots fired, From someone not wanting to ruin their first new centrefire. Cheers Dave.
Graham M
Fire 1 then clean……………….for 5 shots. Fire 5 and then clean………… for the next 20 shots. Fire 10 shots and clean……….for the next 30 shots. There will be variations on this theme but they should be more or less the same. Some people say that there is no need for this regime, but the idea is to condition the barrel without allowing copper to enter the pores of the barrel and stay there. Cleaning between shots cleans out the pores before they smooth up. G.M.
mry716
Totally Agree. So there you are two people of the same mind. I would perhaps add that I find it preferable to use a round nose, flat base 'Hunting' bullet for your bedding in process rather than one with a boat tail and long pointed nose such as Ballistic Tips. It just provides more wall to bullet contact and speeds up the polishing process.
