a r gilbert
hello all in need of help does anyone know how to change a turbo? freelander td4 any advice welcome thank you
elgreco
I had a td4 and the turbo went on mine. The cause apparently was a blocked egr filter which caused back pressure and blowing the oil seals on the turbo bearings. I got an exchange turbo for about £400 and another £400 to fit the bloody thing Good luck Tom
Paul223
Firstly can I ask why you think the turbo has gone?
a r gilbert
hello tom and paul, not sure yet car past mot but he said oil leak by the turbo , could be feed pipe or return pipe I was just asking if anyone knew if it could be done from the top? or the bottom, have since learned from a guy on one of the forums you need to go both ways. it looks very awkward to do without a ramp but I will have a go,thanks will let you know what happens. tony
Paul223
Easy enough, but a bit fiddly I'd spend some time giving it a good wash first to remove oil and dirt so that you can check where the leak is coming from and also so that on the strip down and rebuild you don't get dirt in the turbo inlet ..... most important! elgreco
When mine went there was no doubt it had gone. It was drawing oil straight into the turbo and out the exhaust I had to strangle one of the intercooler pipes to stop the engine as it was reving faster and faster even after taking the keys out, I was lucky it didn't self destruct. If it's leaking oil externally I suspect it's just a feed or return pipe joint. Clean it up and find where it's coming from before you start to dismantle it Cheers Tom
