Gun Troubles

On the 1/12/6 I brought A second hand .22 BSA Lightning from Greenfields Shooting Grounds, Canterbury, Kent. When I brought it I asked whether it I could have it chrono'ed before purchase. They said no need, As they chrono all air rifles when they purchase them second hand. I thought fair enough and purchased my air rifle happily and went off eager to do some shooting!

So obviously took it up the farm and on doing some target work noticed that the pellets were not all that accurate and dropped quite often. I just assumed that this was down to me being a newbie etc and thought hard work will soon solve my problems. Although things never really improved and when discovering my neighbour shot an air rifle he leant me his chrono. So today I have finally had chance to get in the garden and chrono it. Using BSA elites it came up at a 8.4-8.6ftlbs!!! Obviously being a "full power" hunting rifle I felt quite annoyed!

Phoned Greenfields, explained the situation and asked what could be done. I was told that I will have to have it respringed which will cost me! Shocked, I explained that I was told it had a 3 month warranty and got a "oh well I suppose if you bring it back by 1/3/7 we will have to sort it." I replied by informing him "i will be bringing the rifle up in the morning to get it sorted" and that was the end of the convo.

This is about typical as the shop has been less than helpful from 30secs after they had my money. I was considering upgrading to a .177 PCP anyway but not sure how they are going to react when I ask to change the Lightning for a .177/give me a refund/ give me a credit note and discount on a new/2nd hand PCP or at very least I want them 2 give the lightning a bloody good tune up etc

No, I dont have faith in them, Have phoned the one other air rifle dealing gunshop within 50miles of me and there cheapest PCP at the mo is a S410 which i a huge jump from the £160 + pellets, targets & slip i paid for my lightning combo. :P what do you do? If i cant have a refund then I will just have to accept the repair really. I doubt the refund will happen as I have had it for nearly 3 months (even though the problem has been from day 1, i just blamed my lack of exp)

Take it back and ask for a reciept describing all the "warranty" work carried out on it. Then when you trade it in at a proper gunshop you will have proof that the rifle has been serviced and therefore get the top dollar rate for it. Ofcourse you could sell it privately and get even more for it, the reciept will give the new owner confidence in the rifle, a selling point.

That was my backup plan if all else fails. Its just so annoying, I really wish i had taken someone with me and been more firm on getting it chrono'ed in front of me before I brought it. Normally, I would but i thought it was quite a good buy and just trusted my local RFD.

just been to greenfields, they are at the mo saying the gun is under 10ftlbs (so my neighbours chrono is wrong?) and that even though under warranty i will either have to pay for it being resprung or pay £500ish for a new S200 with scope and pump. They will trade my gun in but not for what I payed. So at the mo what do I do? I am thinking of going back and giving them a right bullocking as I think at the least it should be repaired free (being under warranty and over 1.5ftlbs out from factory setting), what does everyone else think? Am I being unreasonable to insist on a repair for free?

I would mate! If you have purchased an air rifle from them that they say is 12ft/lbs (regardless of whether or not it was second hand) and they refused to chrono it whilst you were there at the time of purchase, and it then turns out to be under 10ft/lbs then I would definately insist on the repair. How much did you pay for it and how much are they saying they will buy it back for? If the difference is not to bad to what you purchased it for then I would go for the PCP (if you can afford it mate!)

Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted! :D

Not sure on resale price his words were, it depends (on basically what he feels like and has in stock). I can get a full AA S200 kit with logun pump, 3-9x40 scope and silencer etc for £500. Which is about £100 more that from Ramsbottom's. I could get it from uttings with a logun lamp kit (or harris bipod) included for the £500ish my local RFD wants!
