tonker
Hi Guys, I don't know if this will interest you but I'll post it here anyway. Last year I was asked to clear some Roe for a local farmer. When we went to recky it we counted 26 in 6 fields. He wanted us to clear them but we didn't want to do that and we took enough to keep him happy. This year he wanted more of the same. Our shooting method is a twelve foot ally tower rachet strapped to my trailer, on the back of my Disco. The farm is on the moors (dead flat), and the tower gives us a good safe platform to shoot from and always gives a good downward shot/ backdrop. The tower is wrapped in green mesh netting with shooting flaps so we are invisible. This is not sporting this is control of numbers. From in the tower being towed we are in touch with the driver by radio. Today we went out across the moor and saw 7 laid up. We got as close as we could before they stood up and got a bit twitchy. being flat they can see you a long way off, but being a vehicle and not a person helps I think. After a wait and watching them through the scope for 5 mins I loaded the .270 and settled for the shot. I was using some home loads (min book load) allowed for a bit of drop and took the shot. Missed just over the top! Saw the strike in the grass (must have taken hair off). But they didn't have a clue where the shot had come from so 30 seconds and another shot presented itself. This time no mistake. Legs buckled and dropped on the spot. The rest took off over the ditch and across the fields but to our surprise in a big semi-circle. in five minutes they were back in range, looking in the direction of their fallen comrade. Crosshairs just behind shoulder and sent the shot, second one down, I reloaded and was on a third but didn't pull the trigger as I thought we had enough to eat for a while. The Farmer wouldn't agree but then again we weren't going to tell him. Went to collect the fallen, first was 276 paces (only got little legs) about 250 yds I would think. and the second was 170, The first was farther than I would normally take them but we knew we couldn't drive any nearer.
