kippylawkid
A phone call from the farmer on the small shoot where I keeper asking to shoot some pigeons on his rape. His parting comment of "You're keen enough to shoot the pheasants" told me he was a bit miffed so I said I'd have a go this morning. SO I set out at first light more in hope than expectation as he has 3 enormous rape fields that have heaps of birds but are usually impossible to shoot. I chose the first field that has a strip of hardwoods alongside, usually offering a shot or 2. I set up with 6 dead birds from last nights roost and was pleasantly surprised to decoy a fair few. Shooting 12 in just over an hour before they headed for one of the other fields. I made for there and put over 500 off. I set up with 18 dead birds on cradles and remarkably they came back in small manageable bunches. I picked up 20 in just over an hour before I had to leave as I had a cricket team to coach! The birds were hedge hopping in the near gale and were committed to the decoys a long way out. I rang my (lazy) pal to get his ar$e out of bed and onto the field. I'll let you know how he fares. Typical I get the best opportunity for a decent bag in ages and I have to go! Great shooting in the wind though.
fenboy
Well done , the wind today would have helped break the bunches up a bit I should think, shame you could not make a day of it.
kippylawkid
Cheers, Wind definitely helped. great to see birds committed, been a long time. My bone idle pal didn't pitch up until 2pm, still shot 10. I used proper pigeon 5s today as I reckon they're as hard hitting as you need. Not kind on the cheek and shoulder but very few flew off hard hit.
