Best thing to do is to do a clean install of windows:

IE Backup any files you want to keep

boot off the windows XP cd,

do a clean format of the drive or partition and install windows on that partition/drive

its a pain putting everything back on there but its alot better than using system restore, you will have a shiney new install.

I use Norton ghost or Acronis True image, which basically makes an image of my hard disk...so..i do a clean install of vista, put everything on there, drivers, updates, programmes....run the image programme and create an image of my disk...then when things get clogged up on my pc, i just whack the dvd in, load the image and voila i have a new clean install with everything i need already loaded on there.
