SNAKEBITE
This topic is sparked off by what I have bought today, I'll start at the beginning so bear with me for a moment I have always wanted a FENDER Stratocaster guitar, but not being that talented a player I could not really justify spending the money on one. I just settled on my Squire Strat, which to be honest is brilliant anyway! However It crossed my mind that by saving £2 coins I could save up and not really notice the money going. As an addition I was going to buy it and pass it onto my son (who is expected in mid May) when he is either 18, 21 or responsible enough to look after it. I wanted to buy it in the year that he was born so when he gets it he will have a bit of history, plus the fact that guitars go vintage after 25 years so it might be worth a bit by then! Anyway I picked up a 60th Anniversary edition Stratocaster today paid for with the £2 coins. It was second hand but was bought last October so is brand new to all intents and purposes. It cost me £220 as opposed to approx £449 which was the list price (but in reality they go for around £380) Being a 60th anniversary edition it will become a collectors item which is good so the boy is hopefully going to have a gem on his hands! Has anyone done or had done for them anything like this? Any heirlooms passed down with a story behind them?
Shootingman
I was given a bottle of scotch (Laphrohaig) the day my son was born,it didn't increase in value so on his 18th birthday we sat down & drank it. lol
Dunkield
I bought the boy a Gibson SG for outstanding school results + his bithday - so that is his own heirloom. He had better bloody well look after it too!
DirtyDeeds
Blimey, Gibsons and Fenders. My daughter wanted an SG but the Gibsons were out of my price range, so we settled on a Vintage VS6 - I love my Squire Strat although it now has Hot Rail pups, switchable between single/h'bucker via push/pull switches on the 3 pots, and is now sporting a 3 ply fingerboard and new tuners. Back to the subject. My grandfather bought my two elders sisters a watch each as soon as the could tell the time. Sadly he died when I was just 2 1/2 yrs old, so my mother gave me his Oris wristwatch, an inovation in those days since most of them were still on chains in a waistcoat! I also have his old gold tie pin. When my father died I had his two rings, and when my mother passed away last year I had her wedding ring, and with some of the money left I purchased a St Christopher so I kinda' have two items from everyone. SNAKEBITE
DD, it isn't what you have it's how you play it! The Vintage range is excellent. Your daughter should be well chuffed with it. I like the sound of your strat, I have never had the guts to mess around with my guitars, I keep them standard and hope they age gracefully! Oh and it's nice to see you have a few heirlooms from your family.
