scolopax
Spoke to my brother today who has being checking our trap line for the last few days. On entering a 4 acre fir wood along the central wide he flushed a woodcock from the boundary hedge. The bird flew straight down the ride and disappeared from view as it entered open airspace at the far end. Half way down the ride he thought he glimpsed two birds flying beak to tail rapidly across the top of the firs but did not get a good view. He checked a tunnel trap (empty) and then proceeded to the far end of the ride, where he had lost view of the woodcock. Emerging into open ground he flushed a hen sparrowhawk from just round the corner of the wood, which flew off labouring with the weight of a dead woodcock! There was a large patch of plucked woodcock feathers and blood where the unfortunate bird had been caught. Funnily enough i found the same signs of a predated woodcock just forty yards away from this kill but a year previously!
tiercel
There are quite a few Austringers who fly "Spars" at Woodcock. Top sport.
