Glenlivet
My 02 Freelander TD4 has started making a grating/grumbling noise at low road speeds, ie less than 35mph. I thought it was the near side front wheel bearing but that seems to be ok. It's going into the garage for "investigations" on Monday, just thought I'd ask on here to see if it's a known problem. Rear shaft bearings have been done in the past and this does seem to be near side front. The noise is related to road speed not engine/gearbox speed. Btw, applying the brakes makes no difference to the noise so unlikely to be a brake problem. Edited March 16, 2016 by Glenlivet
Hendrix's rifle
Did you jack it up and rock it a bit (left and right) to find any play? Should have asked me, garage is in Holmes chapel and wouldn't have charged labour :L Let me know what it is if you dont mind
TONY R
Hard to say but look at front ns cv joint and feel for roughness even play in to the gearbox, if the diff bearing colapses its going to star smashing things up. Lots of things it could be thats the trouble without physicaly seeing it.

Rear axles running free, front heavier but driving the gearbox. VCU seems ok and no noises from the diffs so having the front shafts pulled on Monday. Didn't know you're in HC, "froggy" shooting mate in Bosley looking at it but thanks for the offer. Will post diagnosis, doubtless won't be cheap! Hendrix's rifle
Cv shaft bearing. Not sure if the freelander has one though as I don't work on many?

"Smashing things up" sounds really, undesirably expensive 😟 Edited March 16, 2016 by Glenlivet

Mark737
Hi think you might be looking at the transfer box starting to play up from memory £250-350 for a recon
handy4454
Check the prop shaft bearings, one each side of the VCU, the first time I had a bearing run dry it sounded like the front N/S wheel bearing or CV joint. If it is the bearings replace the pair and buy decent, I made the mistake of replacing just one and used a blue box cheapy, within two months the prop was off again to do the other one then again a year later to do the pair, as they say practice makes perfect atb handy

handy4454
Just experience with the vehicles, we have run a 99 L series, a 2000 Gold 50 and an 06 TD4 and they have all been reliable and simple to work on hope the FL2 that will replace the 99 when it eventually gives up the ghost is as good atb handy
