davo
I know its all been asked before in some form or other but , I am going to apply for my FAC for vermin control on my 900acre permission, usual suspects rabbits, long range crows and fox etc. Opening a can of worms here and if it can be narrowed down, what are the two most versatile calibers to cover most occasions, I've got a SGC already and air rifles, and being ex-military have a lot of previous experience handling and using larger caliber weapons. I was thinking, .22LR or .17HMR and a .223.
Dead-Eyed Duck
Getting a 0.223 for 900 acres only is wasting your money, as you'll only use it a couple of times a year. Similarly, if you get a 0.22 and a 0.17hmr you will eventually shoot out the rabbits unless you are very self restrained. So, if it's longe range crows and rabbits and the odd fox etc save your money and get just the 0.17hmr. Now the above is a common sense answer, which most of us shooters do not have. If you have the dosh get a 0.22 and 0.17 as I still don't think that you can justify the 0.223. What the heck, buy all three I assume of course that the police would pass the land for 0.223. tulkyuk
You are about right with your calibres 17hmr and 223 - but i find the HMR is still just that little bit noisy for a decent rabbit outing - so maybe ask for a .22 FAC air rifle as well. 17hmr is an excellent choice for long range rabbits, crows, magpies, e.t.c. and will also kill charlie up to 100yds or so -but thats just my opinion The 1 in my avitar pic was shot @ 135yds with 17 grain remington ammo from my hmr, last summer.
