TONY R
Had a series 3 with a 2.2 BMC in Didn't have that engine in long, took it out and put a P6 3.5 V8 in That was in the days before conversion kits, had to cut the adaptor plate out and centre and drill to suit, that's time consuming Went well though, and pulled the caravan nicely. The BMCs were a bit of a lotery on how well they ran, starting was ca big problem on old warn down on compression ex comercial engines, b ut get a half decent one and they were simple and robust enough to pull a landrover about .....just... 45mph was achievable but 40mph a more pleasant option, 50 was stresfull and 60 but a heady dream. I used to tow a stripped down Rice horse trailer about converted to a car transporter, with my series one 80 inch with a 1.5 BMC in it, The ordinance servey map became essential i know more about those little contour lines than anybody and if a route took you through any land where those lines were close together depending just how close together they were and how many of them there was, could mean the diference between getting to a destination or not, low range crawls were common, and i can remember winding my way up the M62 motorway at 22mph screaming it in second gear high range climing an incline near hudersfield heading west with a ford super dexta on the old trailer, i would have been about 18years old at the time and inexperienced, that day was a steep learning curve literaly.
