Ferretboy111
Well truffle has settled in well now, ive researched high and low about puppy play biting etc to find ways to help stop her from doing it. Basically she loves to bite socked feet, clothes on people, faces and hands.... She does it when she is excited, now ive been trying tapping on her nose and saying a stearn NO to her, its sort of helped but she just growls back at me. I dont want to scare her, but id like her to stop biting peoples clothes and tugging on them and biting hard on hands/faces and assert my authority. She is a little 9 week old maddam. Im just worried that she will bite hard when older if i dont nip it in the bud. Any help appreciated. Alex
angel_langers
Hi Alex We had the same problem with our ESS when he was a pup and also the same thoughts as you. Every time we walked around the house he would attack our feet, socks and legs to the point where he drew blood. So we used to give him a quick sharp rap under the jaw and a sharp NO BITE (which was advised from NTTF). It took a few days for him to figure out what we were telling him but with plenty of praise when he listened, it worked. Even now at 10 months old we still use the phrase NO BITE when he gets over excited. Let me know how you get on. Mel
tuck1
Many pups are like this, and you are right to be concerned, all I can say is don't forget the dog is very young and it's early days. My terrier pup was the same. The method I use is to wait until it bites, then instead of pulling my hand away, push my knuckle into it's mouth. Gently but firmly. I use my other hand to hold the back of its neck ferret style. (Incidentally this works with ferrets). You find yourself in a position where you are forcing your knuckle into the dogs mouth, which forces it's mouth open, it can't get away. At the same time I use the command "gentle". Keep the knuckle in there for 30 secs or so, the dog will try to get away. This is not an instant fix, but a few sessions usually does the trick. Once a pup has it's adult teeth, they usually are less nippy, (and their teeth are less like needles). Regards
Ferretboy111
Cheers guys, ill keep persisting.. she is a little madam though, ive tried the pushin my fist into her mouth.. as i too also use that method for my ferrets, she ignores it. Shes getting better though, just gets over excited at times and bites hard. Ill keep you posted Alex
Cyber
this is exactly the same as our weimaraner pup. She bites at everything, but only when she gets excited. we have tried a sharp tap on the nose followed by NO but it isn't working. We have also tried pushing her tongue down which doesn't seem to be working either. maybe we will try the 'no bite' method above.
