Got a phone call yesterday the wheats been cut at reggieguns's shoot......I need to bring my l200 truck with the gun rack fitted so we can have a drive about and lamp from the roof, So drove to Crewe to have a shine....we got there and there was loads of badgers about but not much else.... Did a bit of calling them moving and parking up and a bit more calling and a fox appeared about 150 yards. I watched it follow an embankment and as soon as it turned broadside bang...sent a 40 grain nosler at it...... ****** I missed. There was loads of crud which came out the barrel/sound mod when I shot. I'd cleaned the bore and put it away last week and not rechecked zero so was on a suspected clean barrel.... Reggiegun said did ya see the fox about 60 yards pop it's head up out a dip in the field.....no we were watching one further away and hadn't even seen the close one. By this time the close ones hot stepping it up the field. It's now at 180 yards and 20 yards off cover I needed to stop it....it slowed and started smelling the floor while walking away. Bang dropped it on the spot.
Reggiegun went to collect it after five minutes of waiting and bought it back to the truck, while having a look at it and checking it's sex (vixen) I had another scan with lamp and a second set of eyes had appeared in the cover on the embankment 20 yards behind where the first was shot.
So I grabbed the rifle and cross hairs on what had to be a fox.
I couldn't Id at first but a bit more light from the lamp made it obvious.
It just needed to sit still it's head was up and down sniffing for the scent of its mate
I put the cross hairs just under its chin and bang
Dropped it with a perfect shot through the top of its bib.

Reggiegun went to retrieve to find out it was a dog fox.
I suspect it was the first one I missed.
