michufc
Hi to all I have got a springer who is 5 and due to work commitments and have a very young family I let his training slide. Until now. I now get up early before work and I have a great neighbor who works his spaniels and after going out with him I now going back to the start and my dog is loving it along with me. He is coming on nicely and is a very hard hunting dog and I am getting his steadying back now and I can now push the birds back on our local estate. And as a bonus my six year old boy wants to get into training the dog so happy days Just thought I would share this as it's never to late
michufc
Right just a update I have been going over my training and being very consistent and he is making lots of progress which I am really chuffed with i have really been working hard on the stop whistle which some times at the moment he thinks he's deaf and I didn't blow it 😡
ips
Good progress then. Out of interest how are you training or more to the point rewarding the stop ??
michufc
What I do is a lot of positive praise once when he stops straight away. And sometimes when he flushed a bird and sits straight away I throw a dummy and send him for it as a reward. I am always looking for different ways to try so any options are always appreciated
ips
Similar to me mate, I reward stop with hunting her or a ball thrown to her. A stop or sit to flush is definitely a hunt on as a reward but I turn her away from the flush with a turn whistle first, then reward with continuation of hunt. michufc
Yes I made a mistake of casting him off the direction of the flush and I won't do that again 😂 I will try to get a small video of him working if I can

ips
Well done. Happy dog keeps close. Work in progress but doing good. 👍 If he is ball driven like my cocker I would reward the stop constantly with throwing the ball for him to catch. I am no expert but that's what I do. michufc
Just a quick update we have been trying to throw a dummy when I blow the stop whistle so he has a reward as he loves the dummy and I must admit he sits up a lot faster now and looks at me to be sent. So far so good
