Bale hides

Hi all, can any one give me advice on the building of and using of bale hides?

The rape field is very large (unknown acreage), would take u approx 20mins to walk across it in any direction. The pigeons land mostly smack bang in the middle of it, so a hedge hide wont really work.

I build the hide to my height, does anything go over the top as a roof?

How long does it have to be left in the field for the woodies to get used to?

Do u place the decoys in a 360deg pattern around u?

Any other points?

Many thanx

:D:P:D

Darkturd shot a field of rape today with a bale hide that we set up last friday.Birds came straight in. Used the horseshoe pattern with the magnet in front of the horseshoe. Also put a bit of camnet over the top to act as roof for any high bird swinging in.Had a good days shooting starting at 11.00 and where packed up by 17.00 with a total of 53 birds. Not bad for RAPE! :D

When I place a bale hide, I build it with three sides (I shoot alone, with no dog).

I leave a small gap, about 6-10 inches, where the walls abut ( you may want to look through this).

Assuming you are using a standard bale, I build 3 bales high on all sides.

I then have two spare bales which will be placed on the wall behind me.

I don,t have a roof, but the back bales will sometimes be partly over the back of the hide.

Naturally, you can determine which is the front and back of the hide, on a day to day basis, depending on wind direction.

I like to sit with my back to the wind and set my decoys to allow the pigeons to land into the wind.

Don,t try to shoot 360 degrees.

I am only interested "in front", just as though you were sitting against a hedge.

The longer the hide is there, the better, I suppose.

But, I have built a hide in the morning and shot steadily from it the same day.
