ianmt36
I have read in various posts that certain guns (generally older sxs) can not handle high power cartridges - my question is how do i know what is safe / recommended - how do i relate proof marks to cartridges ? thanks ian
pin
The proof markings will correspond with a pressure, the cartridges themselves will have a pressure which was generated in testing by the maker. Most carts have this written on the box, if not you can find out by asking the maker.
Floating Chamber
How old is the gun? Does it have Damascus Twist barrels? Is it 'loose'? If it is a modern gun, look for 850 - 1200kg per sq.cm or 3 - 31/2 tons per sq. inch. Chamber length is important. 65mm (2.5") 70mm (2.75") etc. Take it to a gunsmith! IF you have a sound gun, (12g) with proof marks similar to those above, you won't go wrong with Lyalvale* Pigeon special. * The ONLY brand for years that produced TRUE 65mm shells.
