Right all I am in need of some help and advice. So here goes

The farm where I shoot wants me to take a more active role in shooting the foxes as the owner is not completely happy with me shooting them with a .22rf.So what is the best calibre and scope and night sight combination to go for with in a reasonable price.

Have been given loads of different advice from going from a 222.50 to somebody advising on a 30.06 all help would be great

The best bit is the farm owner is willing to pay towards the cost of the set up of the outfit

Sweepy :good: :(

Two things that'll help people help you.

What's your budget, roughly?

What range do you expect to be shooting foxes at regularly?

Best scopes you'll get will be Swarovski, S&B, Nightforce. The Archer nightvision unit seems to be good, I think Grasshopper has one and he's doing the business.

As for rifle, I am going for Remington this time.

Another thing I use is the Callmaster digital caller, I find it works very well especially the rabbit squeal.

Forgot to mention calibre. Two most popular on here and other sites will be .223REM and .22-250. Both excellent calibres with their own strengths and weakness. You'll also get recomendations for .222 and .243. .17REM and Hornet will also do the job but I'd favour the other 4 first, thats just me.

Hi John

My budget will be roughly £600-£700 in total for everything(as long as missus don't find out)

average shot distance between 150-250 yards

farm has a valley running thorough it so sometimes can be windy

That seems tight for all the kit you're looking for. Lads over your side of the Irish sea will be better able to advise you on price than me. I doubt you'll get more than a rifle and scope for that though. Won't be a top four scope, unless you come across a great second hand deal. I think the NV gear is out.

At the range mentioned 22-250 will have a bit of an edge over .223. Ouch, hurted to say that lol... As for wind I'm not sure how the two compare. I'll go check ballistics...

According to here the .22-250 will have the edge in the wind. Anything over 200 yards at night is a long way for me at night, I'd try to get closer. But I take my own terrain into account, the fox blends into the mountain grasses very well, not many cut fields etc.

You may be better to look for a s/h rifle and scope for that money. I shoot a Remmy 22-250 and find it very good, however alot of people on here use the 223 and have equal success. The 22-250 is very loud when unmoderated.

Frank swore by his CZ, so that may be worth a look.

Try a few shots at 100 yards, if your zeros good, move it out a further 50 yards and try another few shots.

Once you've done this out to 250 yards, you will have a good idea what your limit is.

JohnG was spot on about the range, over 200 yards is a long way at night.

Try to either get closer to the fox, or get the fox closer to you.

If you miss one on the lamp, they become a real pain in the backside!
