Ballie
Accuracy International rifles, the AW and AE does anyone on here know anything about them I understand that the AW action is glued in and the AE is a normal bolt fit. Can anyone speak of their capabilitites re accuracy etc and what is the differance between the two models (apart from the action fixing)
Baldrick
The AW is the civilian version of the Army's L96 rifle, and I used the L96 many a time. There wasn't an ounce of glue on the L96 - everything is bolted in (it has to be squaddie-proof). The design brief was to produce a rifle that would enable a marksman to make a first-round kill at 600m, however a competent marksman can easily put an L96 to good use out past 1000m. I've never seen or read about the AE until today, when I picked up the new edition of 'What Gun' (don't buy it, it's a **** read). The AW package is GBP3500, whereas the AE (with its 'reduced build specification) is GBP1800 new. No mention of glue though. If I was in the market for such a rifle, I wouldn't bother with the AE - I'd go straight for a Sako TRG, or the AW model above.
A Sick Old Man
I have never heard of the actions being glued in aside from the bedding, the AW is the Artic Warfare version that is designed to work down to -40, the PM is the precision Magazine. They now have a shed full of variations, as well as some new caliber's, 300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua. I have shot the 7.62 AW and can say its a very good bit of kit, a bit specialised and bloody heavy. Not much use for rabbits
jcbruno
I know a guy out here he has a real nice collection of sniper rifles he has a l96a1 a sako trg a parkerhale and a steyr 50cal aswell that new canadian timberwolf in 338 lapua they are all very nice i have fired all of them and i can promise you there is not a ounce of glue or crappy craftsman ship on the l96 a very fine piece of kit
Ballie
If you click here http://www.sportingservices.co.uk/accuracy.asp and watch video 1 you will see what I mean the guy says the AW rifles action is bonded to the bedding block for a perminant fix for life of rifle. I understand the AE is the same action and barrel but its bolted or screwed (allan keys I would think) to the bedding block not bonded. I am only asking because I had never heard of these rifles before and after watching the video you can not be anything other than impressed. I understand they also do a stock and self centring bedding block kit to fit a Remington 700 rifle, does this improve the Remingtons accuracy? Baldrick
That's the AICS upgrade that you're talking about. I couldn't vouch for the accuracy advantage of the AICS stock and bedding, but in all honesty, there are better upgrades out there and far more practical aftermarket stocks. You haven't clarified what you'd be shooting with such a rifle though. The AW and its variants are heavy, bulky, somewhat impractical rifles to own in a civilan capacity. It's a derivation of a military weapon designed to put holes in Her Majesty's enemies, not holes in targets or wild animals.
A Sick Old Man
Well said Baldrick, That was my feeling on the cannon, very good and very heavy. It does exactly what its designed to do, but not much use for anything else. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L96A1
Ballie
Thanks guys, I was only asking about them because I had not heard of them before, I just wanted to know more. Personal from looking at the photos I think the stocks are beautiful and I would be very happy have one. However with regards to the AICS Remington 700 stock up grade kit I agree that there are more cost effective options available. Thanks
