Blimey, Scary Moment in the Middle of the Night

Got home late from the office last night, walked in the door at 9.30, grabbed a glass of wine from the fridge and then sat down with Debbie to wind down.

She then said, “Have you shut the hens up?â€

Me: “Eeek!!! No, I thought you had!â€

I grabbed a coat and torch pulled on the wellies and head out to check the hen house, one hen missing. Damn! She is a dark hen, well camouflaged but in the middle of moult so cant fly that well at the moment.

So I start to try and find her in the field/garden. 30mins later and still no sign of her so I decided to head out over the next field to see if she had wandered too far.

As I walk I flick the torch off an on and scan out in front. It is a grass field that was mowed for silage at the start of summer and not touched since so pretty tall. I still see nothing other than a couple of rabbits.

Then I step on something which decides it does not really want to be stomped on and legs it. I nearly fall over and when I recover my senses, managing not to scream out, I flick the torch on and there about 10 feet away is a fox looking straight at me. I had actually planted my foot right on it.

Immediate reaction was it was busy eating my missing hen but no sign of feathers or a kill of any sort. I can only assume it was taking a nap when out and about.

I head back home and over the night run my rifle lamp beam out over the fields in the hope that would keep the fox away and that the hen would turn up in the morning. Luckily one of the bedroom windows over looks the fields so I simply rolled out of bed every hour and flick the lamp on out of the window.

This morning I was up at 6am and out with the torch again and at 6.30 found the hen safe and sound tucked up in a hawthorn bush no more than 30 yards from the garden.

I must say it was a first for me to actually step on a fox!!! Shame I did not have my shotgun with me as it was a sitting duck.

Very glad the hen made it through the night though.
