Catamong, Your comment about twenty bores is accurate to those who aren't consistant good shots, but I will say that John Batley (probably only second to the great Major Coates) used/uses a twenty bore for all his shooting. And having seen some great shots on pheasant with 20 bore and even a 28 bore, it comes down to being in the right place. In theory you only need three pellets to hit a vital area to bring a bird (dependant on shot size for the sort of quarry you are shooting) down.
