Dan C
Came across this so called aid and thought it looked interesting, especially as I'm left handed but right eye dominant. I have always closed my right eye and been told that's the best way around my cross dominance. Wondering if this little gadget would allow me to shoot with both eyes open? Any views or experiences on anything like this? I mean I'm assuming you don't have to spend the money on the actual sp aid and could maybe use another shotgun bead or something. Makes for quite interesting reading if you look on the Web site.
dwicklow
Unfortunately if you are LH and 100% right eye dominant this wont help. Try simulating it with a bit of blutack on the side of the barrels that your right eye cant see when the gun is fully mounted . It wont work. It may help if your eye dominance is biased 80/20 to the left, but it won't change the overall bias The best option is to learn to shoot right handed. You then can shoot both eyes open, assuming your 100% right eye dominant. it'll feel odd at first, but it's the best option. If you must shoot LH then occluding the right eye is the only way. Shooting one eyed may cause issues on some targets, but there are world class shooters that only have one eye. situndertree
Just wear a curvy baseball cap. make sure the hat is low on the head. this automatically sorts out any issues and the eye furthest from the barrel cant see the muzzle/sight due to it being positioned behind the downward curve. whatever your eye dominance when the gun is mounted the eye nearest the gun will be the one that gets the clear view of the sight. (Curvy peak that is)
Scully
I’ve tried most of these ‘aids’ over the years ( including the easy hit thingy ) as I have a dominant left eye but right handed. I also have an astigmatism and a PVD in my right eye! I can’t really say any have helped at all, and once even had my optician alter the prescription in my left contact lens in an attempt to make my right eye the dominant one. That didn’t work either and just drove me batty! Anyhow, the best way round this issue in my opinion and experience is a very good fitting shotgun, a very good consistent mount, good footwork and concentrating 100% on that bird. I’m not a great clay shot admittedly, hitting around 80 plus % of birds usually, but without wanting to appear conceited am a very good live quarry shot. I put it all down to the four methods I’ve outlined above, and as much practice ( this includes dry mounting the gun at home ) as possible. Gun fit and mount are paramount. situndertree
As a check to make sure the baseball cap is positioned ok and to check that only the eye nearest the stock sees the bead on the end of the barrel, just close the eye nearest the stock and the sight picture should have disap with the other eyes view blocked by the curve of the peak. Try this also with the gun pointing up in the position it would be for an overhead shot to make sure the same. If the cap is low enough over the eyes it should work. Then just get on with it, baseball cap on, both eyes open and shoot knowing there will no longer be any change of eye dominance issues.
