Hi Guys,

hoping for some advice on a new purchase. (use it for sporting clays) I started off buying a gun with no advice and ended up with a Beretta S686 Sporting 28".. Loved the gun, great to use...However, a number of people have pointed out to me that the gun is a terrible fit for me and my chances at shooting better are severly limited..I'm 6ft 5" and well built, and the gun is obviously too small for me..A couple of dealers have offered me what i paid for it in part ex, so need to decide what to go for. Want a 32" 12g sporter.. Maybe a Miroku MK70, Browning B525, or even an XS Sporter?? Any advice is greatly appreciated, like the feel of all of them, and will obviously have it fitted!!

Where are you from mate as you havent filled in your profile.

I am 6' 5" and hve had the same problem.

I started life on a Browning 325 28".

Great gun for big people to start up with.

The 28" barrels are easier to swing

I then moved up to a Browning 425 with 32" barrels.

My local gunsmiths are Donaldsons and R&K Stockcraft both in the Milton Keynes area, they have both extended the stock for me and both guns worked well.

I used to force my head down on the stock causing friction and bruising to my right cheek.

After the stocks were altered I have had no problems since.

In fact Browningboy has has a similar problem and I helped him get his sorted out.

Thanks Tony,

i'm from Bournemouth, and I do get pain in my cheek from forcing my head on the stock. I've been offered £600 for my Beretta, and don't mind spending up to another £700 (so around £1300) I want something thats going to last me a while and one which is easily customised..I can afford to pay for the fitting on top..So any advice on which of these to go for?? Or any other suggestions?

If your primarilly going for clays try the Browning Cynergy Black Ice - should get a 2nd hand one in that price. I know a few folks (in addition to myself) who use them including a friend who's 6' 4" & built like the proverbial outhouse.

Not everyone gets on with them (they feel unbalanced in favour of the barrels but I find that helps the swing for crossers) but the adjustable stock & comb make it a lot easier to fit.

Go to a good gunshop at a shooting ground and ask for thier advice.

Check out different guns and try them to the gun best suited for your body shape and style of shooting

The shop should be able to add shims to lengthen the stock and combe raisers to get the gun to come up to your face.

Gun to face not face to gun!

I have quite a lond neck so a "Monte Carlo" style of stock is better for me but they are like hens teeth so I changed my

shooting style and lengthened the stock.

I shoot more square shouldered than before, therefore pushing my right shoulder forward.

If they can find a gun in your budget and it is easily fitted go for it.

If not get them dimensions hey have come up with like heel to trigger pull combe height cast and shop around.

It does take time but it is worth it in the end.

Also a lot of better gun suppliers have a funny looking gun thing that have fully adjustable stock, combe and cast.

It is used for fitting only.

Gun fit is paramount so do the leg work and it will pay off.

My 425 has a heel to trigger pull of 41.5 cm and the toe to trigger pull is 42cm and it has a flat combe and no cast.

Everyone is different so these sizes are only a guide.

My wife is 5'10" and has the black ice she has maximum combe and stock extensions and it still needs bigging up.

I have put some lead in her stock to stop the usual mmuzzle flip though.

I am 14 1/2 stone and not an ounce of fat and the cynergy is tiny compared to my 425.

Its all about body type and frame size.

Get fitted up

I shoot at Purbeck in Dorset, and they have recommended a 2nd hand Browning Ultra XS sporter...or a Miroku MK70, their advice is obviously which ever one fits best...i just want a push in teh right direction from someone who is not trying to sell me a gun...No question about it, i'm going to get it fitted properly

Are you suggesting other guns, because the ones i'm being recommended arent going to be right for me??

No no I am suggesting them because they are what I believe to be some of the best clay guns for the money, in fact IMO the 68 series beretta is probably the best, shame it does not sit right with you.

Was just offering a few more options for you to look at before you decide :whistling:

I use a Miroku MK38 grade 5 with muitchoke, it is an ideal clay gun and also dosnt look out of place on a game shoot - my stock is 14 and 3/4 " and would suit a guy of you build and hieght very well :whistling:

i have also had an adjustable cheek piece fitted (Alan Rhone) so it can be adjusted to suit my exact needs for comb rise and cast etc

I too shoot a Miroku MK38 (trap - but use it for everything) with 32" barrels and I'm 6ft 4". You don't need an expensive stock raising kit if required too I bought a Beartooth Stock Comb Raiser System (search these exact words on fleabay :whistling:) and it's more than adequate (tidy & well made too - don't feel like a cheap-skate!). :good: :good:
