Sub zero lamping....

I went out with a mate on Wednesday night for a bit of foxing, and it was around -3C / -4C and being a southener that was a bit of a shock.

No wind, moon out and crunchy underfoot meant heavy going  . I was hoping that they would be hungry and run in at the squeek but that only happenned after a few attempts.

We saw one fox in the middle of the first field we entered - we'd been lamping about 10 seconds at this point - a good start. On the bonnet but the stubble was obscuring the fox a bit and it was a bit far off for me. So we try a squeek and the fox vanishes ^_^ . So we try further up the field and walk a bit - making lots of noise on the cold ground and nil wind. Nothing else showed here so we head back out - we see the first fox again a few hundred yards from where we spooked it. Straight to cover and we don't see that one again. Different tactics for that one on another outing (the garage hums a bit at the moment with some bait  so that will be coming out soon).

We press on and the next couple of large fields are showing no foxes - then we try another field and a fox appears in a non shootable area just as we enter the field. So we get the rifle ready on the roof and try calling the fox in for a safe shot - he legs it and dissapears  .

We've spent a few hours out now and are getting towards finishing for the night but decide to try one last field - next to a river and the mist is quite bad by the river so conditions are difficult. We drive along with the river 100 - 150 yards to our right and lamp the area in between. After 10 mins we spot a fox by the river and one behind it the other side of the river. So rifle on the roof and start calling - the nearest fox shows no interest and stays put (not a safe shot where it is so need it to move) the one the other side of the river is running up and down and showing great interest, but can't cross the river  . We consider walking over to change the angle for a safe shot but it is also barely visible just its eyes and head above the river bank.

Then we try another squeeky noise - this time it wants some (to get there before the other fox ?) so I get ready for the shot it runs to a perfect spot about 120 yards away and then sits up - looking through the cross hairs I can see the fox but behind a mass of branches - the bullet won't get though that lot. So call again - weirdly the fox runs side ways - not spooked and not towards the squeek - odd. But now the shot is on :look: No messing, straight to the chest and it drops on the spot.

A good size vixen.

The timney trigger recently fitted stays consistent in the cold unlike the standard factory that I had, and helped with freezing fingers.

A lot of effort for one fox, but worth it.

Hopefully out again tonight to freeze my nuts off again

Happy Christmas Hunting
