Zapp
A gas operated S/A is operated by tapping some of the expanding gas from the cartridge being fired (through vent holes in the barrel), and redirecting this gas to recycle the action. Other types of S/A use recoil operation (the old "equal and opposite" effect of the shot being propelled) or inertia. ZB

Zapp
No worries matey, glad to be able to help. Here is some rather more in depth info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_operation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recoil_operation The recoil operation section also describes how the inertia system works. InGen
what would you recommend which is more reliable in your opinion which requires less work. if it was a gas i would be looking at a Franchi 712 raptor. if not them i would be looking a t a Benelli M2. thanks
Zapp
Gas operated guns generally require more cleaning, but in my experience handle a better variety of cartridges than recoil operated ones. I have no knowledge of the new inertia operated guns offered by benelli, but they seem to have a good following. If you straight up want my recommendation, then go for a second hand Beretta AL391 Urika. Yes, it is gas operated and therefore requires a bit more effort to clean (especially if you are as anally retentive about such things as I am), but it will cycle pretty much anything and is about the best s/a on the market. You could go upmarket and get an Urika 2, Teknys or Xtrema (all from Beretta), but for my money if you just want a straight pigeon/clay gun then the standard Urika is damn hard to beat. I have one and would not part with it. ZB Edited April 13, 2008 by Zapp Brannigan

Zapp
Second hand for a 391 will probably be £500-700. Have a gander here, just hide your credit card first: http://www.guntrader.co.uk/ ZB
