Browning
I'm looking for a new thumb stick for this season, and hopefully Mrs Browning will buy me one at the Midland on Saturday. (My GSP pup took a liking to my old one and decided it was far too long.....little bu**er) Does anyone have any ideas as to what is good/bad about various sticks are made of, and any guidelines on pricing ? Country_est
Lazy Bu**er Whislt out see if you can find a suitable sick and make one your self. The thumb sticks are the easiest to do. I should know cos I've done it, and if I can any one can Only reason to buy one I suppose is to get it quicky cos I tend to leave them to dry in the garage for a while. But usually have a couple of "blanks" ready to go at short notice.
Browning
And therein lies my probem......if only the pup had decided to use my stick as a toothpick 3 months ago I'd have had time to dry one out....unfortunately I need this in two weeks time. Fisherman Mike
Browning I am just finishing off a stick for Elma Fud who was kind enough to send me some Roe legs If you cant get one Saturday let me know I have just straightened some 4 year old hazel staves which have been seasoning in the garage and could get one to you. ( FOC ) Hazel is the best wood by far for sticks shanks with Blackthorn being very decorative coming a close second. It is difficult to get a reasonably straight blackthorn stick of any length but when you do get them they sell very well. Traditional walking sticks are normally made from sweet chestnut. I normally sell my sticks at the countrty fairs at about £16 - 20 for a hazel Thumbstick. £25 to 35 for the equivilent in Blackthorn. £25 to 35 for a market or gardigan stick and £35 to £50 for a antler head Thumb or Market stick. Some of the top stick makers sell there sheep horn sticks for big bucks but when your see the work which goes into the carving of them its no wonder they are a work of art. If only I had the time... Fisherman Mike
You might also try Bobs sticks. its worth a look anyway. If they ever ban shooting i think i will take up stick making full time FM.
Country_est
If they ban shooting you may not have a market for your sticks anyway, as most of the people using such sticks all seem to be people related to the huntin shooting scene. Where as the ramblers all seem to have the new fangled ski pole type sticks these days :*) . Trev.

Browning
Mike, That is a very kind offer, and one I will be pleased to take you up on. Although I am happy to pay you for it, I know how much effort goes into finishing a nice stick. Also, I'll get Mrs Browning to buy me something else instead on Saturday !
