njc110381
As some of you may know my firearms dept got a few detail wrong on my FAC so it had to be returned. I've just got it back with a letter giving the usual routine of rules etc. Nothing new I thought, but I'd better read it anyway. Anyway, here's the interesting part. Let me know what you think of it: CONDITIONS OF CERTIFICATE - SHOOTING OVER LAND (NEW INFORMATION - MARCH 2008) For those who undertake deerstalking activities the certificate conditions now indicate that the control of fox & vermin may also take place with that arm. However, the wording "with appropriate permissions" places an emphasise on the certificate holder to ensure permission to shoot fox & vermin has been obtained from the owner of the property. For those who have fox control they will be approved vermin also - again subject to acquiring land owners permission. Now that sounds interesting to me. It is (in my view) telling me I can now shoot rabbits with my 6.5x55 if I chose to do so. What a result! I'll be keeping this letter somewhere safe
InGen
haha on the website it say for good reason it would be "silly to consider a 308 rifle good for shooting rabbits and would not be considered good reason" so they say you can shoot rabbits with a far bigger bullet that a pretty nice firearms dep you've got there lol
Suffolk shooter
Not being too hot on calibres such as 6.5 x 55, I assume that this would be slight overkill for rabbits But on the flip side for vermin control does this now mean you only need the one calibre for all providing you have permission and that the land has been passed for that calibre and that suitable backstops etc. Suspicous (Spelling) mind, but is this a way to get people to reduce the different number of calibre guns they hold? InGen
hum i wonder but then it only works for larger caliber not for small then other wise you could get rather stupid person with say a 22lr hunting deer or something.
njc110381
I'd use it, but not if I wanted to keep them! A fairly soft commercial round from federal fires a 140grn bullet at 2650fps, which is 2183ft-lbs muzzle energy. Considering a .22lr subsonic round is only giving about 100ft-lbs and a hyper velocity version about 160ft-lbs it's not something that would bring any dinner to the table It is something I'll keep in mind if I see a Magpie though. I hate Magpies
bob300w
Could be a lengthy debate coming up as to whether rabbits are vermin or ground game, but rats, mice and cockroaches are definitely vermin......
stuey
Got my first FAC in Jan 08. 3 rifles - .22LR, .17HMR, 6.5 x 55. All three rifles have a condition for vermin control, and the 6.5 x 55 has an additional condition for deer and fox. regards Stu
