Holland&Holland
After my visit to my mates permission in Friesland where i shot the two bucks (see other topic) i was invited in Germany near Kulmbach. I go there several times a year. I was there couple of weeks ago just to see what was going around roedeerwise. This time i brought the gun and the hunt was on. The first evening i was at my favourite grassy slope where there is a lovely view over the valley. Saw loads of roe, both male and female but i was out for a particular nice buck with symmetrical antlers. An half hour from dark it still didn't come out the woodland and i decided to go for a yearling cull buck. One of those was already standing on the meadow a good 170 meters out. Bit far and because it was the first evening didn't shoot. Would be more changes during the coming days. Then another yearling came out just 60 meters in front of me. Waited little while and then decided to shoot this one. dropped on the spot. The other yearing buck and a doe just grazed on and didn't pay attention to the shot amazingly. The morning after i was on a high seat overlooking yet another grassy valley with loads of juicy herbs and grasses. Saw again loads of roe, two of them bucks. Decided to stalk them through the woodland. Came in close, step by step and spying every 5-10 meters. Then i heard a shot close by out of the direction i saw one of the bucks earlier. Quickly i looked out for the other buck. That was still out there, but looked startled. I quickly assesed the situation and the buck was broadside and there was good hind cover (steep hill) for a save shot. Layed down and took the shot. Buck dropped on the spot. I then called my mate and it was indeed him who fired and shot the other buck. I was very p@$%sed off because it could have been quite dangerous. He was supposed to be at another location but took the liberty to go stalking in "my" area. Told him off, he still was not very convinced it wasn't that bad. I told him that he never have seen me stalking in the wood and i didn't expect him there. I could have been in the same direction as his shot. He then admitted it was a bit stupid of him. These things make you quite aware of the danger you have with firearms and that you have to be as save as possible. I consider myself a pretty safe shot but these events are a good reminder. The other morning i shot a yearling doe. It came out of the rape and was very curious looking at a hare. But during this period it is good to cull these (or shoot the does in autumn/winter time). But yearling does are best for female culling as they do not have calfs yet. Went out for more yearling doesbut didn't get any more, saw 4 more bucks but only had permission to shoot two of those. Still had wonderfull experience, apart from the scare i had earlier. Edited May 7, 2008 by Holland&Holland
