senile novice
Hi everybody why does 177 springs cause 22's to be over limit and what would a 25's power be increased by using 177 spring.
codling99
should imagine its to do with size of spring,if its too big for gun,it gonna make power to high if you force it in,dont think theres any differance in size from 177 to 22 in same gun, chamber the same, just barrel different
bob300w
As codling says, the springs are the same for 22 and 177.
codling99
your not thinking about pre charged are you,i would think power would be up if you changed barrels on a pcp rifle, not positive though.allways check wiyh chrono if you alter any air rifle,or risk fine and loss or never getting a sg or fac if caught
senile novice
thanks for your info lads but I still think there is a reason for not putting spring/performance kit for a 177 into a 22. The same reason PCP fire less 177 than 22. there must be a super brain out there with the right answers.
mightyrover
.177 delivers more umpf due to the pellet being lighter. So a .177 kit in a .22 would put you in fac territory
el-chimbo
hey hey.. simply maths this.. a .177 slug must be travelling faster than a .22 to have the same impact force.. a .22 will be doing somewhere in the region of 640fps to gain 12ftlbs, where a .177 (being lighter) will need to be doing around 780fps ish to get the same power.. Sooo, .177 springs, being the same size as .22, will produce more power than a .22 spring.. Hope this helps.. Matt..
staglioni
Its not the spring its the barrel thats what knocks the power up when you swap it
el-chimbo
well if its not the spring, why does a .177 spring or gas-ram take a .22 over-limit???
airssassin
well if its not the spring, why does a .177 spring or gas-ram take a .22 over-limit??? I'm with el-chimo on this one. The .177 pellet needs more speed to achieve the same power (ft/lb), therefore the springs are more powerful. If you put a spring or gas ram from a .177 onto a .22 rifle, it will increase the power to above the legal limit (15ish ft/lb). This principle is what makes .177 PCPs use more air (less shots per fill) and .22's more economical with air. mass x velocity = power
martin1
yes putting a 177 gas ram on a 22 will over power, like putting a 177 barrell on a 22 will as long as your probe seals the barrell.. on pcps the 177 springs are bigger to hit the regulater harder "in my rifles case"so simple to over power your rifle but remember its not worth the risk mate, you will go jail 5years for even 12.1 ft/ibs.. springers have to be set up right to achieve consistent shots and low recoil, so packing them out is not the answer but may be so on pcp .. be care full
martin1
barrell will only have little effects if you keep same cal spring and barrell but if you change 177 barrell for 22 and springs set up for 177 your going to jail .. if you have applied for fac and want to power up your self pcps are simple and gasrams but leave springers to the likes of venom or the factory. be verry carefull ps i also understand a new gas ram with correct barrell 177,gasram177 will be a little over power as it has to settle down. senile novice
Thanks to everybody I think I get the gist of it. I was only interested in why not in trying it out because I have fac and dont need to put it into practice. I have scanned previous forum subjects and think its great that you guys take time to help out where possible, keep up the good work.
