Topgunners
SATURDAY: I ventured back to the barley fields of last week only to find hardly a bird in the sky anywhere. I am sitting in my jeep having a coffee; watching and scanning the fields with the bino's when in my rear view mirror I sees 2 jeeps arriving in the yard. I gets out and has a few words with the 2 drivers and says they are welcome to have a go but nowt about. I then decides to go drive-abouts and many miles and numerous farms later I spot a field of WHEAT with some massive blow holes all over it. Very early round here for blown wheat but there were a few pigeons flitting about upon the hill so i drives half way up the hill and sets up between 2 trees looking down the hill with the wind straight in my face. Not too sure on how the birds will decoy but I set up the deeks facing into the wind ; downhill with a magnet and 3 spreaders. After a short while the pigeons were dropping like stones, quick swerve and straight into the blow holes and the deeks. I shot steadily all afternoon and was even shooting birds in the rain, between the rain and after the rain. They just wanted it big time. Ended up with 103 birds and upon leaving had a quick chat with the farmer and said I would be back on Sunday for a look. SUNDAY: I arrived very early in the morning so I could have walkabouts in the grass fields looking for evidence of Basil, and there was loads of it all over the adjoining fields. Pigeon feathers in half a dozen spots where they had been feeding on the unpicked pigeons. Back soon with the .243. Anyways whilst walking over the hills I spotted a marquee in the rear grounds of the farm and decided to go ask the farmer what was happening. They were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary today and I said should I leave the pigeon shooting till next week and he says " NO WAY, if they come shoot them, don't worry about the guests and the noise. Every bird shot saves my crop to help pay towards the DO!" I laughed and went and set up on a different blow hole and after a short while had 1 or 2 pigeons but they were markedly slower in their numbers and by 12.00pm had shot 39 and 1 feral ,and decided to pack up and go shoot some blackies on another farm. I said my farewell to the farmer & his wife and passed on my good wishes to them both and departed. Upon arriving at the next farm I drove into the yard and about 100-150 jackies and rooks lifted up into the sky from in and around the barns. I decided to set up the magnet buried in the middle of a round bale to the side of the buildings and hid down behind some more bales and waited. I sat for an hour & half and ended up with 17 before I departed home for Sunday lunch (with all the family, who were visiting us ) for a change. " what's up darling? broke your gun or shot all the birds in britain?" was the greeting i got. My missus should be on Telly, I think. Great weekend out and some lovely shooting into the bargain. Staffs-Shooter
Sounds like a good one. I had a good day on Friday on laid barley (109) then another good one Sayurday on laid wheat (106). Went back for half a day yesterday (wife nagging etc) but the wheat field was very quiet with birds not wanting to comit following a blasting on the previos day, that said i ended up with 25. Still nearly 250 over 2.5 days was worth it. Chap i was shooting with (seperate fields) also had 180 over the days so we did our bit for the farmers. Roll on friday.
