Iaindp
I took my 10month old springer out yesterday for his morning walk. He's doing a grand job of dogging in by bouncing round in the bushes. The last couple of weeks I've been taking a gun on our walks to get him used to it but yesterday I took a shot at a woodie and off he went to do his first proper retreive. He brought the bird back, sat in front of me and put it in my hand! All the blood, sweat, tears and hollering over the past few months were worth it! I brought the woodie back and let the dog sit and watch as I cleaned it, fried and sliced it and wacked it in with his dried. He went bonkers for it and raced around the area in the garden where I'd cleaned it looking for more. He deffo seemed to know that what he was eating was "his" bird. So I did the same again this morning whilst out in the field. Again he had it for his dinner and loved it! I'm well pleased - They were his first 2 proper retrieves following his training, which made it all the more satisfying but he seems to have learned his part in the daily routine now! ROBLATCH
its nice to see your dog coming on in leaps and bounds and im pleased for you ' but dont make the mistake that many make and try too much too soon as a months enjoyable training can take a minute to get out. good luck and happy training hope all goes well
Iaindp
What dog have you got in mind Trussman? I would advise that what ever you're going to go for - take as much advice as you can from people on here, buy it from a good breeder and make sure he's got good lines (if you're going to work him??). You probably know that already but there are plenty of pitfalls - I came across one or two undesirables when I was looking for my ESS but fortunately bought well in the end. I wasn't quite aware of the time they take up (mine is my first dog) but the walks soon become part of your daily routine and become a pleasure. Our shoot is about a mile from where I live so it's perfect for training and walking out with the dog and gun. The training is also hard work and at times very frustrating - mine's nowhere near ready to take on a shoot yet but that's my fault as a newbe "trainer". Whatever, I'm sure you'll enjoy your dog - 10 months down the line I've got no regrets! Iain
Trussman
Probably a good old Golden Labrador. I like ESS and Cockers, but I'm looking to start Wildfowling in the future and I think the Lab is best suited to this purpose and a complete novice like myself.
