Horrocks
I had a great time out shooting bunnies with my faithful hound yesterday, the first time i've taken him out, cos he's a soppy sod and i worry he'll hop up and scare them or not get under cover. Anyway, i shot about two at a time, waited for them to come out again, and so on, for about an hour. Each time they cleared off i sent him after the corpses. He'd perked up each time i'd fired, watching me closely, and once i'd sent him off he went after one bunny, brought it back to me, and without prompting went to collect the second, even if it was at the complete opposite end of our field of view. How the hell did he know where i was shooting? I was impressed. HE's been out once on a shoot with my dad, collecting birds, and was apparently the best dog there, having never been out before. It must be instinct, because we'd never been shooting with him before, and had never used him to pick up or taught him to, having been content with teaching him the basics of walking at heel e.t.c. and whilst he's a fantastic dog with a good pedigree, his mother is runty and gunshy, and his father is an imbecile.... I've fed him a ouple of rabbits before. which may account for his keeness! Any body else had this immediate and unprompted behaivour from a dog, first time? seisobs
I have a 9 year old Black Lab, I have not been shooting long, the first time I took her out I was a bit apprehensive as she is very frightened of fireworks, I put the deeks out sat her in the hide beside me, when I shot my first pigeon she legged it taking the hide with her, I thought that's it, go and find her, pack up and head home but no, she was sniffing round the deeks then she found the pigeon then promptly ran out to the middle of the field with it. I had to go and get it back because no matter how much I coaxed her she wouldn't bring it back. After that I tied her on her lead on a fence post behind the hide, she was gagging to go every time I shot. No problem at all, I was well impressed but the wee ****** just won't bring the birds back. Can you train a 9 year old Lab???
