i have always wondered if it is possible for a shotgun cartridge to be accidentally fired when dropped shiny side first onto a hard uneven surface, how much force does the primer need to be struck with? and has anybody ever heard of such an accident?

Roughly.. Yes.

The primer needs a fair amount of power to be stuck on it, and just in the right place. So technically, yes, but you'd really have to throw it with all your might onto a jagged pebble, that caught it straight in the pebble, so it'll be pretty unfortunate, but it's possible.

I've never heard of such an accident, but It's fairly easy to do with a .22 rimfire, or any rimfire for that matter. (Though, I'd seriously recommend against it)
