Hiya x I need help with my 2 Springers - Logan & Mya xx

Logan is 2 years old, we have had him since he was 8 weeks old, he is a great family pet and very loyal.

But i am having trouble walking Logan, he walks great on the lead, but he never seems to come back to me when i let him off!!! My partner does most of the walking with the dogs but as of last week he has had the flu so iam walking them. I let logan off and it takes me about 15-20mins to catch him and get him back on the lead. I have tried calling his name, whistling, try treats even waking in the opposite direction but nothing seems to be working???

As for Mya, she is only 4 months old, i know she is still young but she is so nervous outside, she is scarred of people walking past her, cars, prams etc. Even when someone comes into the house she hides and won't come out until they have left. She also has a bad habit of eating my other dogs business. Can anyone give me advise on how to stop this and trying to stop her being so nervous inside and out???

Thanks

Kelly,

Logan needs plenty of recall work on a retractable lead to make his come back reliable. I would suggest that you read through the obediance training posts that are pinned in this section.

As for Mya...(cool name. One of my pintos is named the same).... she needs to get out and sociolize. Take her out to the park and sit in a quiet area and let her watch the world go by. As she relaxs with this bring her closer to the distractions. Do not coddle her when she is acting afraid let her sit and face them. You can reassure her with your voice some but do not pet her until she has sat through what is scarring her then tell her good girl and give her a pat.

If you try to pet her while she is affraid you are renforcing that fear and tellingher that it is all right to be scarred. Start small and work up. In the house if someone is coming over have her on a lead so that she can not run and hide but again must face the world around her you and your visitors are best to ignor her completely, just have her there.

Again there is a large piece on this in the training section someplace if you have a look around you should find it if not let me know and I will do a guide for you.

Hiya x Thanks for the info x and i will have a look under the sections that you suggested xx

As for getting her out and meet new people etc x she is out 3 good walks a day x and also an extra wee walk at night before bed xx

She is walked with my other 3 dogs x 1 hour in the moring x 2 hours in the afternoon x and again 1 hour at night x including into the park before bed xx

She is great with other dogs outside x plus young and older children x i stay next to a primary school and high school x so she see kids all the time x and also my sister is 3 years old and my own son is only 4 months and she is great with them xx

It just seems to be other people (adults) and anything that moves e.g. cars, prams etc xx

But will look under the sections that you said and see what happens xx

Thanks xx

Hi Kelly,

I would start getting Mya out on her own and start having her face her fears. She is using both you and the other dogs as a crutch. To start just go outside some place quiet with things happening in the distance....example traffic, kids, horses 200 yards away sit down and let her watch and listen. If she is showing any sign of fear or hiding ignor her, as soon as she relaxs give her praise.

Go slow and decrease the distance slightly each day.

I would also not let either Mya or Logan off lead again until the recall was sorted.

Have you been finding the information you need in this section so far?

I'm sure you are exercising her with the best of intentions but I would SERIOUSLY reduce the amount of exercise you are giving the 4 month old pup, or you risk damage to her joints and bone structure which will not manifest itself until later life.

A good rule of thumb (although there is no "one size fits all" as far as dogs are concerned) is no more than 5 minutes per month of age, 2 or 3 times a day. Tops your pup should be getting 3 x 20 minute exercise/training sessions.

The good news is that mind stimulation through puppy play training will tire her out.

Good luck with both of your dogs :hmm:
